Womenintribalart.org Part 3 Coverage Whitehawk Antique Indian Art Show

by Joyce Schwarz, founder www.womenintribalart.org and tweeting on twitter @tribalartwomen, bestselling author and speaker.

Wow, so much to cover at the Whitehawk Antique Indian Show in Santa Fe that we are now on Part 3 of the blogs on this amazing event.

Native American Apparel

Native American clothing is a vital part of American culture and history. Weaving, beading, and detailed work such as feathering played an integral part in Native American clothing. Native American clothing was a main factor in cultural and religious ceremonies. Intricate beadwork and feathered headdresses were also commonly worn during ceremonial displays.

Women were primarily the seamstresses of the tribes. They would prepare the skins that would be used to make clothing. The act of making Native American clothing wasn’t a task that the women took lightly. Many of the decorations and the objects used by the women to adorn the clothing were significant symbols of stature and power.

In making Native American clothing women family relationships were also honored through the art of making Native American clothing. Women would diligently work on the clothes for loved ones, and by using objects that represented the occupations of her loved ones.

One of the best displays of Native American clothing was by Mystic Warriors from Evergreen, Colorado. You can see more of their collection at their website at: www.mysticwarriorsindianart.com

Native American children's toys like this doll and cradleboard are often hard to find because many were confiscated or they were so worn they did not survive the centuries. But look at the intricate beadwork on this piece - it is brilliantly colored too.
